Furlough

Hello, this is Wilhelm. In this blog I am looking at the irresponsible spending caused by the Government response to the pandemic. I would like to apologise for such a long period between blogs, personal matters took precedence when normal life resumed.

“When government – in pursuit of good intentions – tries to rearrange the economy, legislate morality, or help special interests, the costs come in inefficiency, lack of motivation, and loss of freedom. Government should be a referee, not an active player.” – Milton Friedman.

We are back in lockdown and although the government says it will end in December, it is clear that the situation has worsened and will likely lead to measures similar to those in the spring. Knowing this Government and its track record, incredible since it is run by Conservatives, I expect it to drag, perhaps it will even stop us from enjoying a normal Christmas.

What concerns me is that we could be facing lockdowns forever. This virus is obviously very proficient, and the people brainwashed by the media appear to have decided lockdown is necessary to face this, and possibly for other issues on the Big State Government’s agenda. It’s scary that this could be how we slide into totalitarianism, though there are many voices speaking out against it.

Another issue that isn’t being considered is how much money the government is spending on the crisis. They bribe us (or some of us) to stay home with furlough payments, they bribe us to go out for dinner with schemes like ‘Eat out to help out’. That scheme cost nearly £1 billion on its own, way over budget. The Covid-19 package overall is more than £200 billion. Government debt is over £2 trillion, which is more than 100% of GDP, and the highest since the recovery from World War II. This is just so far.

So as this lockdown continues, and the payments pour in to keep the people from revolution, we are creating conditions for an economic crisis that will make the crash of 2008 look like a children’s game.

In utter disrespect of Conservative values and principles, this Government is creating conditions for the people to be overly dependent on government handouts. A government not brave enough to say no to pressure from the mass media and whiners in society, instead of pursuing economy-reviving programmes.
